Solomon Is­land sailor join­ing lo­cals for Yep­poon trip

SOLOMON Is­land youth sailor Alpheus (Al­phie) War­den will ar­rive in Air­lie Beach on Fri­day to join the Whit­sun­day Youth Sail­ing Team on their ex­cur­sion to Kep­pel Bay Sail­ing Club, Yep­poon next week.

The 15-year-old is a mem­ber of Point Cruz Yacht Club (PCYC), Ho­niara, and coach of their Op­ti­mist squad and will join 10 other team mem­bers trav­el­ling to the event.

Op­ti­mist sailors Hamish Swain, Bren­dan Hoffman, Cameron Brown and Jasmin Tickle of Air­lie Beach, Ai­dan and Ty Gum­mow and Mack and El­liana Mitchell of Bowen and the lo­cal in­ter­na­tional 420 team of Mjah Hewett and Eva Lorenz are all at­tend­ing the trip.

Al­phie is here at the in­vi­ta­tion of lo­cal op­ti­mist coach Klaus Lorenz, who trav­elled to Ho­niara twice in 2012 to coach the Op­ti­mists at PCYC, vis­its which were ini­ti­ated by Ed­die Gray, a found­ing mem­ber of WSC, and long-time sup­porter of ju­nior sail­ing.

Queens­land Youth Week com­prises 3 days of in­ten­sive coach­ing from class-spe­cific high-per­for­mance coaches, fol­lowed by the 3-day Queens­land Youth Cham­pi­onship re­gatta.

The fol­low­ing week­end, Ai­dan Gum­mow in his Op­ti­mist, and Mjah and Eva in their 420, hope to make an im­pres­sion on the NSW Youth cham­pi­onships be­ing held at Ge­orges River in NSW.
