Solomon Island sailor joining locals for Yeppoon trip
SOLOMON Island youth sailor Alpheus (Alphie) Warden will arrive in Airlie Beach on Friday to join the Whitsunday Youth Sailing Team on their excursion to Keppel Bay Sailing Club, Yeppoon next week.
The 15-year-old is a member of Point Cruz Yacht Club (PCYC), Honiara, and coach of their Optimist squad and will join 10 other team members travelling to the event.
Optimist sailors Hamish Swain, Brendan Hoffman, Cameron Brown and Jasmin Tickle of Airlie Beach, Aidan and Ty Gummow and Mack and Elliana Mitchell of Bowen and the local international 420 team of Mjah Hewett and Eva Lorenz are all attending the trip.
Alphie is here at the invitation of local optimist coach Klaus Lorenz, who travelled to Honiara twice in 2012 to coach the Optimists at PCYC, visits which were initiated by Eddie Gray, a founding member of WSC, and long-time supporter of junior sailing.
Queensland Youth Week comprises 3 days of intensive coaching from class-specific high-performance coaches, followed by the 3-day Queensland Youth Championship regatta.
The following weekend, Aidan Gummow in his Optimist, and Mjah and Eva in their 420, hope to make an impression on the NSW Youth championships being held at Georges River in NSW.
