Townsville run­ner tri­umphs in trial run

AROUND 150 run­ners from right across Aus­tralia took part in the an­nual Run the Whit­sun­day Great Walk trial run held on Sun­day.

The daunt­ing 28km trial run is put on by the Mackay Road Run­ners in con­junc­tion with Queens­land Parks and Wildlife and the Proser­pine/Whit­sun­day SES.

The race started from Brandy Creek as com­peti­tors tack­led the tricky con­di­tions be­fore fin­ish­ing ex­hausted at the fin­ish line at the Air­lie Beach la­goon.

Townsville run­ner Si­mon O’Re­gan fin­ished as the mens win­ner with a time of 2 hours 14 min­utes and 56 sec­onds, ahead of Stephen Court­ney and Fred Fiedler.

Lo­cal favourite Erin Pearce claimed the women’s ti­tle in 2:44:26, beat­ing run­ner-up Sara Win­ter and third placeget­ter Erin Stafford.

Road Run­ners rep­re­sen­ta­tive Nicky King said that the event had re­ceived lots of pos­i­tive feed­back and that many of the vis­it­ing run­ners are keen to re­turn for next year’s event.
