Townsville runner triumphs in trial run
AROUND 150 runners from right across Australia took part in the annual Run the Whitsunday Great Walk trial run held on Sunday.
The daunting 28km trial run is put on by the Mackay Road Runners in conjunction with Queensland Parks and Wildlife and the Proserpine/Whitsunday SES.
The race started from Brandy Creek as competitors tackled the tricky conditions before finishing exhausted at the finish line at the Airlie Beach lagoon.
Townsville runner Simon O’Regan finished as the mens winner with a time of 2 hours 14 minutes and 56 seconds, ahead of Stephen Courtney and Fred Fiedler.
Local favourite Erin Pearce claimed the women’s title in 2:44:26, beating runner-up Sara Winter and third placegetter Erin Stafford.
Road Runners representative Nicky King said that the event had received lots of positive feedback and that many of the visiting runners are keen to return for next year’s event.
WINNERS: Run the Whitsunday Great Walk male and female winners Simon O'Regan and Erin Pearce with master of ceremonies Will Higham.
