FOR­MER Whit­sun­day Brah­man Sam Gardel has been se­lected in a strong Ital­ian team in the 2013 Rugby League World Cup to be played in Eng­land and Wales in Oc­to­ber and Novem­ber.

Gardel has played the last three sea­sons with Souths Lo­gan in the Queens­land Cup and is one of two Souths Lo­gan play­ers in the 24 player squad.

The squad, in­cludes many NRL and English Su­per League play­ers, in­clud­ing the cap­tain of the team, Syd­ney Roost­ers full­back An­thony Minichiello who has played 264 games for the Roost­ers, 11 games for New South Wales and 19 tests for Aus­tralia.

Gardel is a hard run­ning for­ward who has per­formed con­sis­tently for Souths Lo­gan since leav­ing the Brah­mans three sea­sons ago.

He has been in the se­lec­tors’ sights since he played in early sea­son tri­als with the Ital­ian squad. He will com­pete for a run on spot against for­mer Aus­tralian rep­re­sen­ta­tives Craig Gower, Terry Cam­pese and An­thony Laf­franchi as well as cur­rent first graders Mark Minichiello, Cameron Ci­raldo, Ai­den Guerra and Joel Rei­th­muller.

Gardel is the first lo­cal rugby league player to make an in­ter­na­tional team in the al­most 100 year his­tory of the Whit­sun­day club.

Italy’s first game is against Wales at Mil­len­nium Sta­dium at Cardiff, Wales on Satur­day, 26 Oc­to­ber on the same night as the Aus­tralia ver­sus Eng­land game.

There are four­teen coun­tries play­ing in­clud­ing Aus­tralia, Cook Is­lands, Eng­land, Fiji, France, Italy, Ire­land, New Zealand, New Guinea, Samoa, Scot­land, Tonga, USA and Wales.

Other for­mer Brah­man play­ers in the Souths Lo­gan squad in­clude Chris Faust and Darcy Wright while North Queens­land rep­re­sen­ta­tive Grant Cook also spent some time with the team in 2011 and 2012.

Gardel’s fa­ther Luchie played thir­teen sea­sons first grade for Whit­sun­day team, which is the long­est span of the more than 1000 player that wore a Whit­sun­day jersey.

Luchie, along with his wife Ann will be on hand to give ad­vice to their son if needed in Wales.
