FORMER BRAHMAN IN RUGBY LEAGUE WORLD CUP
FORMER Whitsunday Brahman Sam Gardel has been selected in a strong Italian team in the 2013 Rugby League World Cup to be played in England and Wales in October and November.
Gardel has played the last three seasons with Souths Logan in the Queensland Cup and is one of two Souths Logan players in the 24 player squad.
The squad, includes many NRL and English Super League players, including the captain of the team, Sydney Roosters fullback Anthony Minichiello who has played 264 games for the Roosters, 11 games for New South Wales and 19 tests for Australia.
Gardel is a hard running forward who has performed consistently for Souths Logan since leaving the Brahmans three seasons ago.
He has been in the selectors’ sights since he played in early season trials with the Italian squad. He will compete for a run on spot against former Australian representatives Craig Gower, Terry Campese and Anthony Laffranchi as well as current first graders Mark Minichiello, Cameron Ciraldo, Aiden Guerra and Joel Reithmuller.
Gardel is the first local rugby league player to make an international team in the almost 100 year history of the Whitsunday club.
Italy’s first game is against Wales at Millennium Stadium at Cardiff, Wales on Saturday, 26 October on the same night as the Australia versus England game.
There are fourteen countries playing including Australia, Cook Islands, England, Fiji, France, Italy, Ireland, New Zealand, New Guinea, Samoa, Scotland, Tonga, USA and Wales.
Other former Brahman players in the Souths Logan squad include Chris Faust and Darcy Wright while North Queensland representative Grant Cook also spent some time with the team in 2011 and 2012.
Gardel’s father Luchie played thirteen seasons first grade for Whitsunday team, which is the longest span of the more than 1000 player that wore a Whitsunday jersey.
Luchie, along with his wife Ann will be on hand to give advice to their son if needed in Wales.
