Trailer boats to go troppo for cup

Whitsunday Times - - ON THE WATER -

AT LEAST four Whitsunday Sailing Club boats are heading to Bowen this coming weekend to compete in the North Queensland Cruising Yacht Club’s (NQCYC) inaugural ‘Troppo Cup’.

Breakaway, Lorna Rose Too, and High Tide will be among those competing in what will hopefully become an annual event.

NQCYC commodore Ray Travers-Jones said the regatta, sponsored by Leo Rodriguez’ Airlie Beach-based business North Queensland Telecom, was open to all trailable boats, including the popular sportsboat class.

“If it comes on a trailer they can race it basically,” he said.

“And we’ve got the perfect shores – just the ideal bay for the smaller boats.”

Four races will be held over the weekend of October 5-6. A meet-and-greet at the NQCYC clubhouse is scheduled for Friday, October 4, from 6pm and competitors need to be registered by 8pm at the very latest.

Travers-Jones said the first race of each day would most likely be a short sprint inside Edgecumbe Bay, followed by a longer passage race.

A band will play at the clubhouse on Saturday from 7.30pm.

Nomination forms can be downloaded at www.nqcyc.com.au or for more information phone 4786 3490.
