PLAYERS turned up nice and early for the first round of the Whitsunday Golf Club Championships last Sunday.

Competition was keen with plenty of ball run on the dry course.

Scoring was also tight with runner up places in all three grades decided on count backs.

George Meharry was absolutely sizzling in B grade and the nearest-the-pins were well spread in A grade, while the C graders didn’t get any nearest-the-pins on the day.

The A grade winner was Geoff Harrison on nett 73, ahead of runner-up Peter Browning on 74 on a count back. Ross Richards had the best gross score. The Whitsunday golfers gave former club captain and events organiser Darren Williams a fond farewell as he departed the Whitsundays to travel to Western Australia to link up with old friends.

Next Sunday will be the second and deciding round of the club championships with tee off at 7.30am.

The following weekend is the trip away to play the Magnetic Island course.
