Team-mates facing off in invitational match
RUGBY league team-mates Pia Poid, Shanay Taylor and Adeline Poid will face off against each other this weekend as they take part in the annual Mackay All Stars versus South Sea Islanders invitational team this weekend in Mackay.
The trio of girls play club football for Brothers in the Mackay women’s competition but this weekend Pia and Adeline Poid will line up for the South Sea Islander team while Shanay Taylor will run out for the All Stars.
“It’s a great way to finish the season and we have some relatives back in Mackay who we will be playing against which is always fun,” Adeline Poid said.
“We all played for Brothers this season and were travelling down every fortnight until the competition was called off late in the year due to lack of numbers. It will be weird playing against Shanay but I will have to try and cream her,” she added with a laugh.
The game will cap off a successful season for the girls with Adeline picking up the best back award at the Brothers presentation night.
The match is being held in Mackay to commemorate 150 years of the Black Birding period in Australia, where people from Vanuatu, Solomon Islands and other Pacific nations were brought to Australia to work in regional towns mainly in the sugar cane industry.
The ladies game kicks of at 4pm on Saturday at Virgin Australia Stadium before the main game at 6.30pm between the national teams of Vanuatu and Solomon Islands.
