Grand final glory for girls

Whitsunday Times - - SPORT -

A THUMPING 7-2 win in Saturday’s grand final saw Whitsunday FC’s women team complete a remarkable undefeated season.

Wanderers were no match for the minor premiers in the season decider as they scored goal after goal to cap off a perfect season for the team.

Coach Florian Feirer praised his team’s performance on Sa- turday and right throughout the year.

“It was a great effort from all the girls and we dominated right from the beginning of the game. The girls were very motivated and nobody wanted to lose the grand final after going through the entire season unbeaten,” he said.

“It was a complete team effort and really was a fantastic end to a perfect season.”

Up 4-1 at halftime, WFC added three more goals after the break to seal the club’s first ever premiership in any grade in the Mackay and district competition.

Tyrah Dunn and Rebecca Page scored doubles on the day and Nardarh Warren, Abi Draper and Danielle Degan all scored one each in the five-goal win.

“We had 17 players turn up ready to play and everyone really performed well. It was also great to see one of our rookies, Danielle Degan, score in a grand final in her first season,” Feirer said.

The team will face a tough task when they move up to the premier women’s competition next year but the club is confident they can hold their own and are hoping to have enough players to field two teams.
