Whitsunday Times - - WHITSUNDAY VIEWS - Leanne Abernethy

THE news that the Oatley family of Hamilton Island has challenged the 35th America’s Cup is big news for Hamilton Island and the wider Whitsunday region.

Publicity from the challenge is already evident with global, national and regional media coverage this week – and the challenge was only confirmed on Tuesday morning.

The Oatleys are famous for their love of sailing and for their Wild Oats wine brand after which the family’s succession of custom-built yachts has been named.

It will be exciting to see how Hamilton Island helps to shape the future of the America’s Cup and what developments might occur on our own doorstep. For those of us who remember the America’s Cup win in 1983, we know that it is a big deal.

We will follow the progress of this story with interest in the coming months and years.

On another matter...

This weekend is a long weekend. Traditionally, Queensland has celebrated Labour Day in May but this has now been changed to the first weekend in October which is in line with NSW.

There’s plenty on around our region this weekend and it is hoped the town will be busy with an increase in people from our drive market. Police have been cracking down on drink driving and are likely to have a strong presence this weekend so enjoy your weekend and stay safe.
