Junior sailors compete at youth championship event
JUNIOR sailors represented the Whitsundays at the Queensland Youth Championships in Yeppoon, from September 27-29.
The three-day racing event was preceded by a three-day youth development training camp.
Altogether, nine Optimist sailors, Hamish Swain (11), Brendan Hoffman (13), Aidan Gummow (12), Ty Gummow (11), Cedar White (11), Jasmin Tickle (13), Mack Mitchell (10), Elliarna Mitchell (11), and Cameron Brown (13), took part in the events. Optimists sailing in their first regatta were siblings Mack and Elliarna Mitchell, and Cameron Brown.
In the 420 class, Mjah Hewett (16) and Eva Lorenz (14), were also sailing their first regatta together.
Parent and junior sailor spokesperson Jeremy Cooper said coaching, both on and off the water, was of a very high standard, with a group of very experienced coaches headed by John Bertrand, a Laser silver medallist who has taken part in several America’s Cup campaigns.
The Optimists were also coached by Brady Lowe, sailing master from the Southport School and Danny Fuller, YQ North Queensland coach. The 420 sailors shared Alex Gough from RQYS and Craig Ferris from Sydney, with the 29ers and sailboards.
Mr Cooper said the coaching sessions in the first three days were held in steady to strong northerlies, giving the Whitsunday sailors a good taste of launching and retrieving in surf, “something they only ever experience at Yeppoon”.
“All Whitsunday sailors sailed very well, coped with the conditions, and finished all their races,” he said.
Mr Cooper said the star Whitsunday performers at the youth championships were Aidan Gummow and Hamish Swain, who came second and third respectively in the Optimist class.
Mjah and Eva also did very well, coming fourth in the double-hander division and second in the 420s. Mjah, Eva, and Aidan are now heading for Sydney to compete in the NSW Youth Championships. Aidan will join a very big (80plus) fleet of Optimists, and the 420 team will sail with about 15 others.
