Riders hit the track for practice and ride day
MORE than 25 riders from across the Whitsundays, Townsville and Mackay hit the track of the Whitsunday Raceway for the Whitsunday Motor Sports Club practice and ride day on Sunday.
The event was a great opportunity for competitors to achieve some track time in preparation of round 4 of the Whitsunday Motor Sport Club Championships which will be held at the raceway on Sunday, November 3.
Whitsunday Motor Sports Club secretary Mungo McMurtie said the event was designed to give more community members access to the raceway.
“It is a good chance for people who don’t want to race competitively to have a fun day on the track, and certainly for new-comers on road bikes, it also gives them an opportunity to gain race experience,” he said.
Michele Wright from Whitsunday Caravan and Camping said it would be great to see more women getting into the sport.
“Once you’re out there on the track it is amazing how much you can develop your skills and best of all it is in a safe environment without the threat of oncoming traffic,” she said.
“I’ve been focusing on improving my speed and some of the other guys here are learning to ride for the first time so it’s great to see them giving it a go.”
No official times were kept during the single day event which was open to junior riders right up to the very best veterans of the sport.
