17 billfish caught in annual tournament
THE Whitsunday Game Fish Club’s Reelax Simrad 2013 Light Tackle Game Fish tournament took place over the weekend, and a total of 17 billfish were tagged and released, and many other species caught over the three day event.
Fifty-nine competitors on 18 boats braved windy conditions on Friday and Saturday, before the weather turned, making conditions perfect for fishing on Sunday.
Local angler and club president Ash Warland had his day in the sun, claiming champion angler, with an impressive catch of three black marlin and one sailfish. This catch also resulted in Watta Cat, the boat Warland was on, winning champion boat over 7m, followed closely by local charter boat Sea Fever and Bad Habits
Warland said there were some good size marlin around 80kg being caught, and people travelled from as far as Brisbane and Mooloolaba to compete.
Eight juniors and five women took part, with Sorell Davidge coming first in the female category and Dayle Johnson taking out the juniors.
A Mackay family of three and one friend chartered Sea Fever for the weekend, with owner Ash Matthews skippering the boat. With a very impressive catch of two marlin, 17 mackerel and seven tuna (most caught and released), Matthews said the boys had an outstanding weekend. “They were absolutely ecstatic. The 11-year-old lost a sailfish 25 minutes after we started fishing. It was an awesome event and I can’t wait to come back next year,” Matthews said.

FISHING WINNER: Life member Bob Spees presented Whitsunday Game Fishing Club president Ash Warland with the champion male trophy after competing in the tournament.
PRIZE MACKEREL: Kynan Beutel from Mackay caught the heaviest mackerel in the tournament onboard of on the weekend.
