17 bill­fish caught in an­nual tour­na­ment

THE Whit­sun­day Game Fish Club’s Ree­lax Sim­rad 2013 Light Tackle Game Fish tour­na­ment took place over the weekend, and a to­tal of 17 bill­fish were tagged and re­leased, and many other species caught over the three day event.

Fifty-nine com­peti­tors on 18 boats braved windy con­di­tions on Fri­day and Satur­day, be­fore the weather turned, mak­ing con­di­tions per­fect for fish­ing on Sun­day.

Lo­cal an­gler and club pres­i­dent Ash War­land had his day in the sun, claim­ing cham­pion an­gler, with an im­pres­sive catch of three black mar­lin and one sail­fish. This catch also re­sulted in Watta Cat, the boat War­land was on, win­ning cham­pion boat over 7m, fol­lowed closely by lo­cal char­ter boat Sea Fever and Bad Habits

War­land said there were some good size mar­lin around 80kg be­ing caught, and peo­ple trav­elled from as far as Bris­bane and Mooloolaba to com­pete.

Eight ju­niors and five women took part, with Sorell Davidge com­ing first in the fe­male cat­e­gory and Dayle John­son tak­ing out the ju­niors.

A Mackay fam­ily of three and one friend char­tered Sea Fever for the weekend, with owner Ash Matthews skip­per­ing the boat. With a very im­pres­sive catch of two mar­lin, 17 mack­erel and seven tuna (most caught and re­leased), Matthews said the boys had an out­stand­ing weekend. “They were ab­so­lutely ec­static. The 11-year-old lost a sail­fish 25 min­utes af­ter we started fish­ing. It was an awe­some event and I can’t wait to come back next year,” Matthews said.

PRIZE MACK­EREL: Ky­nan Beu­tel from Mackay caught the heav­i­est mack­erel in the tour­na­ment on­board of on the weekend.
