Whit­sun­day Sevens rugby tour­na­ment this weekend

THE Proser­pine/Whit­sun­day Raiders Rugby Union Club will be bring­ing back some hard-hit­ting rugby union ac­tion when they host the an­nual Hogs Breath Whit­sun­day Sevens tour­na­ment this Satur­day, Oc­to­ber 12.

More than 12 men’s teams, four women’s teams and four mas­ters (over-35’s) teams will be tak­ing to the field of the Whit­sun­day Sports Park for an ac­tioned packed day that will leave spec­ta­tors on the edge of their seats.

The Bowen Mudcrabs will be post­ing four teams, field­ing two men’s teams, one women’s and an over 35’s team and the chal­lenge is on the mighty Raiders club to match the vis­it­ing Mudcrabs.

The two Raiders men’s team will have their fi­nal train­ing ses­sion tonight at 6.30pm, with the sen­sa­tional Martin Roveda call­ing the shots and or­gan­is­ing the teams.

Club pres­i­dent Bruce Span­na­gle is call­ing on all club sup­port­ers and mem­bers to get in­volved and help out on the event which again is al­ready prov­ing to be a pop­u­lar com­pe­ti­tion with teams com­ing from all over the state. A pre­sen­ta­tion func­tion will be held at the Hog’s Breath Cafe in Air­lie Beach.

Span­na­gle said helpers were re­quired to set up tents, line- mark­ing and var­i­ous other jobs on Fri­day and Satur­day and would like to see the army of sup­port to make the clubs ma­jor fundraiser of the year a suc­cess. There will also be more than $4000 in prizes to give­away with games kick­ing off at 9am.
