Whitsunday Sevens rugby tournament this weekend
THE Proserpine/Whitsunday Raiders Rugby Union Club will be bringing back some hard-hitting rugby union action when they host the annual Hogs Breath Whitsunday Sevens tournament this Saturday, October 12.
More than 12 men’s teams, four women’s teams and four masters (over-35’s) teams will be taking to the field of the Whitsunday Sports Park for an actioned packed day that will leave spectators on the edge of their seats.
The Bowen Mudcrabs will be posting four teams, fielding two men’s teams, one women’s and an over 35’s team and the challenge is on the mighty Raiders club to match the visiting Mudcrabs.
The two Raiders men’s team will have their final training session tonight at 6.30pm, with the sensational Martin Roveda calling the shots and organising the teams.
Any current players wanting to play must contact Roveda on 0437 342 670.
Club president Bruce Spannagle is calling on all club supporters and members to get involved and help out on the event which again is already proving to be a popular competition with teams coming from all over the state. A presentation function will be held at the Hog’s Breath Cafe in Airlie Beach.
Spannagle said helpers were required to set up tents, line- marking and various other jobs on Friday and Saturday and would like to see the army of support to make the clubs major fundraiser of the year a success. Any players interested in participating in the over-35’s matches which will be composed of two seven minute halves can contact Spannagle on 4946 4981 or 0488 471 106, or Peter Chengody on 4946 6218.
There will also be more than $4000 in prizes to giveaway with games kicking off at 9am.
