Weight loss drug lands man in court
A MAN who ordered a weight loss steroid from the USA appeared in the Proserpine Magistrate’s Court on Monday, charged with importing a border controlled drug.
On April 8, Australian Customs intercepted the package addressed to Shayne Thomas John Warren, containing 30mls of a liquid known as Clenbuterol.
On July 25 police executed a search warrant at Warren’s home address.
The 24-year-old Proserpine resident said he ordered the drug to assist with weight loss and did not know it was illegal.
Defence solicitor Sherrie Meade said Warren was told about the drug by his friends and did not do any further investigations into the product.
She said it was possible to Google the drug but finding out what component of it was actually a banned substance was “quite difficult”.
Magistrate Haydn Stjernqvist accepted her submissions that there was no criminal intent.
“It’s quite an unusual matter,” he said.
Warren received a $440 fine and since this was a Commonwealth offence, Mr Stjernqvist said a conviction would be recorded “as it has to be”.
