CYCLING in the Whitusundays is set to receive a major boost next weekend as the Whitsunday Mountain Bike Club (WMBC) prepare to host riders from across the state at their Dirty Molle Island Escape.

The event is on next Saturday and Sunday and will include a ride on the daunting 45km Run the Whitsunday Great Walk track as well as an overnight campout at South Molle Island and a ride on their picturesque 14km trail.

Club president Chris Labes said next weekend’s event is a social weekend which will serve as a practice run ahead of a race meet they plan to hold on South Molle in 2014.

“First and foremost this is an event for the locals because we really want to get them interested in mountain biking and excited about our upcoming events,” she said.

“We have invited stakeholders from right across the country to come to our social weekend and check out our wonderful tracks for themselves.

The weekend will also serve as a focus group so we can ask our local riders and visitors what they would like to see happen in the sport of mountain biking in the Whitsundays.”

Tickets for the event are limited and anyone wishing to get involved should contact Chris Labes on 0406 830 999.

RIDING IN PARADIES: Whitsunday Mountain Bike Club members Chris Labes and Steve Ward check out the trial ride on South Molle ahead of their Dirty Molle Island Escape on October 26-27.
