Junior cricket in full swing
CRICKET returned to the Kelsey Creek sport fields last Friday afternoon.
There was a good mix of old and new players who were keen to take to the wicket for some cricket action.
The under-12s and 14s combined to form two teams for their Friday Arvo Twenty20 big bash challenge.
The Proserpine Pirates lead by Darcy Larkin won the toss and elected to bat with the Whitsunday Warriors fielding.
The top order for the Pirates fired with Matt Hansen (16), Cooper Lane (16) and Theo Brown (14) getting the team off to a great start.
The Warrior bowlers did well to stall the Pirate onslaught with Jack Dwyer and Eran Kirkpatrick both getting a pair of wickets each as the Pirates finished their twenty overs with a respectable 104 runs.
The Warriors lead by Howard McDonald then began the run chase.
Both Howard McDonald (10) and Matt Shoebridge (10) made steady starts against some good attacking Pirate bowling.
Harrison Sherrington (20) and Regan Knight (20) hit numerous boundaries for the Warriors in their run chase.
However, the Warriors just could not quite sink the Pirates and were contained to 96 runs.
The best of the Pirate bowlers were Theo Brown and Matt Hansen.
The under-10s played a double wicket competition to remove the cobwebs and ensure everyone received a bat and bowl.
Each batting pair received four overs to compile their runs.
The Have A Go (5 to 7 years) and Have A Game (7 to 9 years) mini cricketers started their season with a range of games designed to build their skills and understanding of the game. The program is focused on ensuring the kids have fun, build their skills and learn about team work.
There are still vacancies available for boys and girls aged 5-9 years in the HAG program. Newcomers to the HAG once registered will receive a backpack with bat, ball, shirt, hat and other extras.
The Proserpine Junior Cricket games are held Friday afternoons from 46.15pm at the Kelsey Creek sports ground about two kilometres through Proserpine.
The mini cricketers start at 5pm and finish at 6pm.
If anyone wants to join up it is not too late, simply turn up at the ground, sign up, and away you go.
