Christensen to wield a political whip

Whitsunday Times - - LOCAL NEWS -

FEDERAL Member for Dawson, George Christensen, has been elected to the position of National Party Whip – a senior role in the new parliament.

As the party whip, Mr Christensen will perform the role of team manager, liaising with other party whips, setting the agenda and speaking lists and ensuring party members attend votes in the chamber. Mr Christensen said he was honoured to be given the role.

“The Nationals have a very strong team of talented representatives and I am looking forward to working more closely with them all,” he said. “It is a very important time for the Liberal National government as we work to get Australia back on track.”

The term “whip” was originally derived from fox-hunting where the “whipper-in” whipped the hounds into a pack and pointed them in the right direction.

A reminder of the literal meaning of the term will be a whip on the wall of Mr Christensen’s office in Parliament House.
