Major award for Chris Jacobs
CRUISE Whitsundays executive director Chris Jacobs won the award for the Outstanding Contribution by an Individual at the annual tourism awards on Saturday night.
Mr Jacobs founded Cruise Whitsundays in 2005 with his business partner Roger Dold.
Cruise Whitsundays has quickly become a leading player in the local tourism industry and has plans for further expansion.
Mr Jacobs was elected chairperson of Tourism Whitsundays in 2009, working to support the growth and development of the region’s tourism.
He was unable to attend on Saturday night and was unaware he was receiving the award.
However, he said he was delighted with the news.
“The reason I got so involved with Tourism Whitsundays was that I am still a strong believer in destination marketing, and if each business is doing their own thing and there is no collectively strong promotion of the Whitsundays, then we are wasting our time,” he said.
“We have made a significant effort to change that and get Airlie Beach, the islands and all of the players working together much more strongly than they ever used too. We are still very committed to the Whitsunday region.”
Cruise Whitsunday Chief Executive Officer Nick Hortle said both the company and region’s tourism industry had benefited from Mr Jacobs’ talents and energy.
“The leadership that Chris displays and absolute genius of his ideas have brought many additional visitors to the region and this has benefited a wide array of businesses in addition to our partners in the tourism sector,” he said.
The award, which can only be granted once in a person’s lifetime, is the highest honour of the awards ceremony.
