Masters swimmers excel in Townsville
EIGHT Whitsunday Masters swimmers competed at the Long Tan legends swim carnival in Townsville on the weekend.
Although six out of the eight were age champions, the club came second overall to the host club, Long Tan Legends.
Whitsunday swimmer of the meet was Freya Hill who swam extremely well in all her events.
Some of her best swims include the 400m freestyle in 6.16.95 and 200m individual medley in 3.24.50.
The husband and wife team, Bob and Kay Corskie both performed extremely well and were in the same heats for a couple of their races. Kay beat Bob in the 50m backstroke but lost to him in the 50m free.
Both beat all their opposition in their age groups and took out first place.
After a couple of months off, Di O’Donnell was still a very competitive swimmer, swimming the 400m free in 7.21.75, 200m free in 3.26.36 and 50m free in 38.79 sec.
Quiet achiever, Rob McKay swam well with his highlights the 200m free in 3.45 and 50m breaststroke in 53.74.
Both O’Donnell and McKay won their age groups.
Andrea Mitchell warmed up with 200m IM and then started to get her rhythm.
She improved as the swim carnival progressed and swam a great 50m butterfly, backstroke and breaststroke.
Mark Erickson has not had time to train with his busy schedule, but still managed to give younger swimmers a run for their money.
In a hotly contested age group, he was awarded first place and his best swims were the 50m breaststroke and 50m butterfly.
The coaches were really impressed with swimmers’ performances and the Whitsunday Masters will continue to train on Tuesday evenings and Sunday mornings at the Proserpine Pool.
Some members train for fun and fitness and others are preparing for the next carnival which will be in Mackay next month. Adult swimmers over 18 years of age are always welcome to participate.
