McLean holds on to win Hamo PGA event
SORRENTO teaching professional Craig McLean has claimed victory at the 2013 PGA Professional Championship at Hamilton Island Golf Club
Carding a final round of two over par 73, McLean finished two shots clear of reigning champion Nathan King whose final round of even par was one of the best of the day.
The wind died down during the last day and this was reflected in the overall scoring with most professionals recording their best round of the tournament.
McLean started with eight straight pars though a bogey on the ninth saw him with just a one shot lead over Craig Goodall heading to the back nine.
Victorian McLean made his first and only birdie of the day on the par five 11th hole and when Goodall made bogey on the same hole the gap of three shots proved too difficult for the challengers to chase down.
In addition to the lion’s share of the $50,000 in prize money, McLean has also qualified for the Australian PGA Championship at RACV Royal Pines Resort where he will be teeing it up with Adam Scott, Ricky Fowler, Marc Leishman and Brandt Snedeker. McLean commented about the opportunity.
“It has not really sank in that I will be playing at the Australian PGA Championship just yet but I look forward to getting up there and enjoying the week, and hopefully with some good golf,” he said.
Arriving on Hamilton Island PGA CEO Brian Thorburn talked about the event’s success.
“This year’s tournament has produced two very worthwhile qualifiers into our countries national championship and no doubt that they will represent their states and do vocational membership proud,” he said.
