Promoting the Whitsundays in New York
SEVEN members of Skal Whitsundays, attended the 74th annual World Congress of Skal International, held in New York in early October.
President Peter Upton, vice president Mark Bell, secretary Carolyn Upton and executive committee members Lyn Gregson and Richard Condon attended a Business to Business workshop during the congress to showcase the Whitsundays to members from all corners of the globe. As Skal members must be senior tourism and travel professionals, this was an opportunity to encourage a large number of travel agents and inbound operators to visit the Whitsundays and to have them on-sell the location to their customers.
Whitsunday Marketing and Development Limited donated USB sticks to hand out at the B2B, which contained images and data on the region, and the club also had a number of handouts and gifts with information on websites where more details could be obtained.
Vice president Mark Bell, who was attending his first world congress for Skal said, “I felt there was a genuine interest from fellow Skal members to do business with each other. The important issue seems to be that by doing business with each other, when they send their clients to you, they know you will look after them, and they trust you to do that.” Mark noted that he had already sent information regarding group rates for his hotel to members he met during the B2B session.
Skal Whitsundays was honoured with an award in recognition of their growth in membership numbers and also received numerous accolades regarding the recent national assembly held in Airlie Beach.
The six day congress was attended by 1100 members worldwide, and was conducted on board the largest ship in the Carnival Cruises fleet - Carnival Glory.
The ship called in to various ports during the six days, where congress participants were warmly welcomed by Skal members from the Boston, Portland, St John and Halifax clubs.
