LAST Saturday qualia on Hamilton Island was transformed and became the setting for the inaugural qualia Badminton Classic.

It was a badminton tournament with a difference as it took on an old school theme, styled by the talented Kara Rosenlund, who was recently named the ‘Modern Day Martha Stewart’ by UK Elle Decoration.

The game was played with classic old wooden badminton rackets, players came dressed in their badminton bests, and refreshments consisted of Charles Heidsieck Champagne Rose Reserve, lobster rolls and chicken sandwiches.

An array of engraved trophies were up for grabs with international guests, interstate guests and local island residents all competing in friendly games that unwittingly took on a competitive edge.

Trophies were awarded for best dressed, which suitably went to stylish Melbourne couple Josh Elias and Anastasia Starzynski, the most enthusiastic player award went to renowned Sydney artist James Gordon and Nuala Harvey from UK Sunday Times Travel Magazine and her travel companion Diane Wray won the award for jetset players with the most international flare.

The trophy for the tournament overall winners went to Hamilton Island’s very own Denny-Lyn Dixon and Katie Cahill. Other accolades on the day went to Hamilton Island resident and employee Nick Chapman for honourable umpiring, the best and fairest award went to Tom Edwards also an employee of the island, Natalie Hayllar from popular blog, eatreadlove was awarded best in photos and Mr Personality on the court went to John Noble from the Australian Champagne Bureau.

In celebration of the inaugural event Noble was fittingly responsible for popping the cork and filling the champagne fountain with flowing champagne.
