$550 fine for letting tyres down

Whitsunday Times - - LOCAL NEWS -

A MAN who allegedly let the tyres down on two marked police cars in Airlie Beach appeared in the Proserpine Magistrate’s Court on Monday charged with wilful damage.

Michael Wayne Toombs was seen removing the valve caps and deflating two tyres on a police car parked opposite Magnums at 11.50pm on November 15.

Police prosecutor Elizabeth Cassells said Toombs also deflated a tyre on a police car parked outside Paddy’s Shenanigans at 12am on November 16.

The front passenger side tyre on the first vehicle was found to be down by 7 PSI with the rear tyre 16 PSI down from the recommended running pressure. Ms Cassells said this would have ren- dered the car dangerous. The tyre on the second vehicle was down by 5 PSI.

In court on Monday Toombs disputed these facts, saying there was only one incident and one car. However he apparently admitted to police that this was something he had done before.

Magistrate Haydn Stjernqvist said he was worried about the former Townsville resident “hanging around here if you’re prone to do this”.

“It’s an alarming act of stupidity Mr Toombs,” he said.

“I’m just worried that someone would even think of doing it.”

Toombs was fined $550 and convictions were recorded against him for the offence.
