$10,000 for Movember and dreadlocks are gone
MANY men throughout the Whitsundays rose to the challenge of growing a manicured moustache for the month of Movember.
But it was local photographer and owner of RandR Digital, Russ Benning, who laid down the biggest challenge when he offered to shave off his dreadlocks if his team could raise $10,000 for Movember Australia.
He realised his dreads would have to go as Team RandR Digital raised $10,239 which included $4000 in the final four hours of the great shave off held at Down Under Bar on Sunday.
Mr Benning still can’t believe his team reached their target and thanked the other 20 men who completed a “sympathy shave” on the night.
“One of my staff, John Fowler, announced a secret squirrel donation of $1200 that no-one knew about until the last three hours of the great shave off,” he said.
“I am so proud that the community has supported the business I built from the ground up and helped us reach our target of $10,000 for Movember – a foundation I feel is often overlooked.”
Mr Benning thanked the Down Under Bar for hosting the great shave off event, Boom Nightclub, Phoenix Bar and Mama Africa for their generous donations and Elite Security for throwing a solid bone in the late stages of the competition.
In other local Movember news, Air Whitsunday Seaplanes went down to GSL Aviation after laying down their challenge to see who could raise the most funds for the charity. GSL Aviation raised a total of $1791.65 ahead of Air Whitsundays’ $1025.90.
GSL Aviation pilot Ben Senior said Air Whitsunday would now have to host a barbecue for the winners but both companies were proud to have raised a combined total of almost $3000.
PRD Nationwide Whitsunday agent and Port of Airlie consultant Gregg Taylor grew a fantastic silver moustache for Movember but is now happy to be clean shaven. He said he was stopped on a daily basis by people asking about Movember and was overwhelmed by support of the local community.
Amcal’s team Live Life Whitsundays also raised a total of $567 for the foundation.
