Juniors selected for state team
TWO Whitsunday junior sailors have been selected to compete in the number one Queensland racing team at the Australian Optimist Championships next year.
Aidan Gummow, 12, and Hamish Swain, 11, both members of the Whitsunday Optimist Sailing Team (WOST) will join two other junior sailors from Southport Yacht Club, to form the state’s top team.
Hamish Swain’s mother Ali Swain said her son literally jumped for joy on receiving the news last week.
“It was just really exciting,” she said.
“It’s a real honour to be asked to be in the best team.”
The boys will be attending a training camp at Southport Yacht Club this month in preparation for the event.
The training camp is run by Susannah Pyatt, the Queensland team coach.
Each state is permitted to enter three teams for the national championships, to be held at Victoria’s Mornington Yacht Club in January.
To be eligible for the Australian Optimist Sailing Team, competitors must take part in the teams racing event.
Ty Gummow and Jasmin Tickle, the other members of WOST attending the Nationals, are also vying for a place on one of the two remaining teams.
