Ju­niors se­lected for state team

TWO Whit­sun­day ju­nior sailors have been se­lected to com­pete in the num­ber one Queens­land rac­ing team at the Aus­tralian Op­ti­mist Cham­pi­onships next year.

Ai­dan Gum­mow, 12, and Hamish Swain, 11, both mem­bers of the Whit­sun­day Op­ti­mist Sail­ing Team (WOST) will join two other ju­nior sailors from South­port Yacht Club, to form the state’s top team.

Hamish Swain’s mother Ali Swain said her son lit­er­ally jumped for joy on re­ceiv­ing the news last week.

“It was just re­ally ex­cit­ing,” she said.

“It’s a real hon­our to be asked to be in the best team.”

The boys will be at­tend­ing a train­ing camp at South­port Yacht Club this month in prepa­ra­tion for the event.

The train­ing camp is run by Su­san­nah Py­att, the Queens­land team coach.

Each state is per­mit­ted to en­ter three teams for the na­tional cham­pi­onships, to be held at Vic­to­ria’s Morn­ing­ton Yacht Club in Jan­uary.

To be el­i­gi­ble for the Aus­tralian Op­ti­mist Sail­ing Team, com­peti­tors must take part in the teams rac­ing event.

Ty Gum­mow and Jas­min Tickle, the other mem­bers of WOST at­tend­ing the Na­tion­als, are also vy­ing for a place on one of the two re­main­ing teams.
