Taekwondo students strut their stuff
WHITSUNDAY Taekwondo Oh Do Kwan held its seventh inter-club tournament on Saturday.
A total of 39 students (21 from Proserpine and 18 from Airlie Beach) competed in the technical and sparring divisions.
All students were encouraged to participate as they would be competing against their fellow club members and the sparring was light body contact only.
The inter-club tournaments are designed to allow students to put into practice the skills they have learned without the full contact aspect of a regular tournament.
It was also designed to give students a feel for what it is like to be in a competition situation, be it sparring or technical, should they decide to participate in a higher level tournament.
The events were judged by head instructor Vicky Gillam - fourth Dan black belt, who was assisted on the day by first Dan instructors Jim Hodges, Bowie Hodges and Jarrad Arthur.
There were some great displays of technical skill in the self defence, jumping front kick and poomsae events and the sparring results were excellent, especially from students who were participating in their first tournament.
The senior belt fighters were a sight to see as were some of the Tigers aged four to six years.
It was also great to see the parents who train with their children competing on the day as well. A huge congratulations to all those students who competed.
Whitsunday Taekwondo Oh Do Kwan has training sessions on Mondays and Wednesdays at the Proserpine and in Cannonvale on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
