Whitsunday Times - - COMMUNITY NEWS -

THE Wild Ones Adventure program kicked off their weekend with an exciting expedition to Camp Kanga near the Peter Faust Dam for their final campout of the year.

On Saturday, the excited group of 31 children hit the giant outdoor obstacle course, enjoyed a freestyle dance off with Kossy Halemai from Zumba Fitness Whitsundays, tugof-war competitions, soccer matches and a scavenger hunt with metal detectors.

At night they gathered around the camp fire telling horror stories and toasting marshmallows before running wild for the glow stick party.

The following day, the Wild Ones packed up the campsite and hiked to Peter Faust Dam for the afternoon before returning home.

Wild Ones co-ordinator Ron Petterson said the adventure program had started with 30 children and had doubled to 60 members since Term 1.

“I was surprised by the overwhelming success of Wild Ones but I think that indicates just how important it is for the community to have interactive, outdoor programs available for our youth,” he said.

“The kids are keen for next year and we already have a great list of activities in the pipeline.”

Throughout the year, Wild Ones Adventurers have enjoyed hikes in the Whitsunday region, orienteering, craft nights, cyclone preparation workshops, fishing trips and other fun games.

Mr Petterson thanked the Whitsunday community and businesses for their support.

The Wild Ones Adventure program is open to children aged eight to 12 years and will be back in action in the first week of school term for 2014.
