Cannons geared up for state championships
FIVE Cannonvale Cannons swimmers and their coach Mark Erickson will be travelling to Brisbane this weekend to compete in the 2013 Queensland State long course championships.
The week long event will kick off on Saturday with the North Queensland relay teams facing some stiff competition as they go up against not only the best swimmers from across the state but also guest interstate and international teams.
Individual races will start on Sunday and finish on Friday, December 20, with all competitors chasing a podium finish. Natalie Milne, Ivan Van Zyl, Angus Menzies, Charlotte Mitchell and Emma Hogan will be the all star team representing the Cannonvale Cannons at the championships.
Evan Mitchell won’t be swimming for the Cannons but will be representing the North Queensland relay team at the event.
Local swimmers are planning to use the racing experience to their advantage in preparation of the Queensland state sprint championships in February and national championships in April next year.
Both Ivan and Charlotte have already qualified for nationals that are set to be held in Sydney, and many swimmers are looking to improve their lap times throughout the week to qualify.
The Whitsunday Masters Swimmers will be celebrating the festive season with a Christmas luncheon after swim training on Sunday.
Swimmers will continue to train over the school holidays with a small break between Christmas and New Year’s Day.
