Can­nons geared up for state cham­pi­onships

FIVE Can­non­vale Can­nons swim­mers and their coach Mark Erick­son will be trav­el­ling to Bris­bane this week­end to com­pete in the 2013 Queens­land State long course cham­pi­onships.

The week long event will kick off on Satur­day with the North Queens­land re­lay teams fac­ing some stiff com­pe­ti­tion as they go up against not only the best swim­mers from across the state but also guest in­ter­state and in­ter­na­tional teams.

In­di­vid­ual races will start on Sun­day and fin­ish on Fri­day, De­cem­ber 20, with all com­peti­tors chas­ing a podium fin­ish. Natalie Milne, Ivan Van Zyl, An­gus Men­zies, Char­lotte Mitchell and Emma Ho­gan will be the all star team rep­re­sent­ing the Can­non­vale Can­nons at the cham­pi­onships.

Evan Mitchell won’t be swim­ming for the Can­nons but will be rep­re­sent­ing the North Queens­land re­lay team at the event.

Lo­cal swim­mers are plan­ning to use the rac­ing ex­pe­ri­ence to their ad­van­tage in preparation of the Queens­land state sprint cham­pi­onships in Fe­bru­ary and na­tional cham­pi­onships in April next year.

Both Ivan and Char­lotte have al­ready qual­i­fied for na­tion­als that are set to be held in Syd­ney, and many swim­mers are look­ing to im­prove their lap times through­out the week to qual­ify.

The Whit­sun­day Masters Swim­mers will be cel­e­brat­ing the festive sea­son with a Christ­mas lun­cheon af­ter swim train­ing on Sun­day.

Swim­mers will con­tinue to train over the school hol­i­days with a small break be­tween Christ­mas and New Year’s Day.
