Riders recognised in annual club awards
MORE than 20 riders from Townsville, Mackay, Gladstone and the Whitsundays converged on the Whitsunday Raceway for the Whitsunday Motosports Club practice and club awards day on Sunday.
Riders took to the custom built track for the final practice event of the year with all in attendance perfoming well in the hot, windy conditions to celebrate National Supermoto Ride Day.
Many local riders were thrilled to gain some track time next to the Troy Bayliss Classic 2013 winner, Michael Kirkness, who travelled from Mackay to ride in the practice session.
Club president Andrew Auld thanked all members for supporting the club throughout the year.
“Our greatest success this year was hosting the Australian Supermoto Championships in September and I am pleased to announce that we will be hosting the event again next year,” he said.
“We have already started planning and promise it will be bigger and better than before.”
In the club awards, Ashley Wheeler tasted victory in Formula Road Race and Formula 3 after taking out first place in both divisions.
Steve Darmanin followed suit and was presented with first place in the Senior Supermoto and Senior Motard classes.
Club secretary Mungo McMurtrie was also recognised for his invaluable contributions to the club throughout the year.
Another highlight of the day was the presentation of the most improved junior award to newcomer Jett Ogden.
Other juniors who achieved awards were Broadie Oats, Harry Maxwell and Connor Auld.
Whitsunday Motosports Club will be holding a working bee at the Whitsunday Raceway to clean up the track this Saturday morning and all riders are encouraged to attend.
The club will also be holding their Christmas party at the Reef Gateway Hotel from 6pm on Friday, December 20.
ROAD RACE: Shaun Weidmann was presented with second place in the formula road race class with Ashley Wheeler in first and Mungo McMurtrie in third at the Whitsunday Motosports Club presentations on the weekend.
