Book details league history
LOCAL rugby league historian Tony Price will launch his latest book this Sunday at 11am at the Metropole Hotel in Proserpine.
We wore the Purple and Green documents the history of rugby league in the Whitsundays from 1969-1994, which follows on from the first volume he released earlier this year.
The book contains 443 photos and includes 111 pen portraits of players and officials that helped shape the Whitsunday Rugby League competition.
There are game by game description of the years that players wore the Whitsunday colours and it will bring back many memories for players of all ages as the book covers the super-stars like Paul Bowman, Eddie Muller, Mike McLean, Rod Halley and Adrian Brunker who went on to play for Queensland down to the guy who played two games in reserve grade for the Brahmans.
“If you played the game in Bowen, Collinsville or Proserpine in the 26 seasons covered in the book you probably get a mention somewhere,” Mr Price said.
“The photos in the book have been collected from all over North Queensland and don’t only include the local teams, they also include the opposition and there are many photos of North Queensland representative teams.”
There are hundreds of teams mentioned thanks to the many programs from the Ron Read collection and the extensive collection from the State Library in Brisbane.
“Many of the photos in the book come from private collections and have never been seen before and for the rugby league enthusiast they are a reminder of a strong vibrant rugby league community we called our own,” he said.
Price also names his first thirteen from the 1969-1994 period and pen-portraits 94 players that represented North Queensland or played with distinction for many seasons. He also includes officials and supporters of note that ensured the success of the Whitsunday competition.
