Proserpine home wins light comp
THE winner of the 2013 Whitsunday Times Christmas lights competition is Harry and Fay Milne of Proserpine, with Gary Roser and Courtney Leifels of Cannonvale hot on their heels in second place.
Both homes were commended by the judges for their originality, creativity and use of colour, and have won a $200 and $100 voucher from Airlie Beach Hotel respectively.
The Milne’s have been decorating their house for about 13 years, and have entered the Times competition for about six years. Both families said they put the energy into decorating their homes to encourage the Christmas spirit, and to delight the hundreds of families who visit their homes to see the display.
“We decorate with lights for the enjoyment everyone gets,” Ms Milne said, who has seven grandchildren herself.
“We have a sign out the front inviting people to have a look inside the hedge. There is a train on its tracks and a white cross with lights that twinkle like stars. The neighbours have helped out, everyone’s had a laugh.”
The judges, from Zonta Whitsundays, the Lions Club and the Parent Action Group, drove around on Sunday judging the eight entries from Jubilee Pocket to Proserpine.
Secretary of the Lions Club of Whitsundays, Helen Toy, judged the competition for the second year running, and congratulated those who entered. “Most people really embraced the spirit of Christmas and put a lot of thought into their displays,” she said. “People used some imagination in their displays.”
With six days left until Christmas, there is still time to drive around to view the displays.
