Outriggers impress in the Cook Islands
MEMBERS from Outrigger Whitsunday recently travelled to the Cook Islands to compete with paddlers from across the Pacific.
In one of the first races of the event, Tyson Joyce steered his under-19 Mooloolaba men’s crew to victory, taking some brave lines close to the reef break, making the most of the swell and successfully bringing the team home from fourth to first to win the challenge event.
Junior paddlers Courtney Joyce and Yemi Ehrnst joined Adam and Alison Joyce in a 12km open mixed event, finishing mid field out of 20 teams in a strong race.
Both Courtney and Yemi also bought home a bronze medal for their under-16 marathon race with the Mooloolaba under-16 team.
Vania Ehrnst in the under-12 marathon event returned with silver and Ashton Joyce in the under-12 sprints returned with bronze.
The Vaka Eiva event for the juniors was a great opportunity to compete against other Pacific nations.
Adam, Alison and Tyson Joyce joined forces with Mooloolaba juniors to paddle the Round Rarotonga 36km changeover event in the open mixed category.
Carmen Bekker joined the Maia Outrigger Club from Sydney, paddling the 18km marathon, sprints and 36km changeover event.
She continued to Aitutaki for the Motu 2 Motu 36km changeover fun event to bring home a first place trophy as part of an international team from Aitutaki, US, New Zealand and Australia.
Ashley Kennedy competed at the senior masters category across marathons, sprints and the 36km changeover events, bringing home a first place medal for the Around raro event with the Mudcrabs Townsville outriggers crew.
Whitsunday Outrigger held their annual presentation at Shingley Beach on Sunday with a barbecue and fun day in the water.
The best paddlers for 2013 were all honoured and the club is already looking forward to a big year ahead in 2014.
