Sailability celebrating successful Australia Day

Whitsunday Times - - LOCAL NEWS -

MEMBERS of the organisation Sailability Whitsunday are celebrating the success of a special Australia Day fundraising event, held at the Whitsunday Sailing Club (WSC) on Saturday, January 25.

Perfect weather conditions allowed Sailability Whitsunday volunteers to operate dinghy sailing trips in conjunction with the club’s Australia Day activities, both of which raised much-needed funds for the non-profit organisation.

Sailability volunteers also manned an early morning market stall to promote community awareness, before heading to the club for a busy afternoon on the water.

New Sailability Whitsunday president Ross Winterbourn thanked the community, Whitsunday Sailing Club and volunteers for their hard work and donations, all of which he described as vital to Sailability’s success.

He also extended a special “thank you” to the parents of former WSC member Dan Kane, John and Mim, for their generous donation to the organisation.

Mr Winterbourn said 2014 was shaping up to be an exciting year for the local Sailability branch, with the recent approval of a grant to build a new storage facility to operate from.

“Sailability has been steadily expanding in volunteers and participants and the unique experience Sailability offers its clients is a wonderful asset to this community,” he said.

Sailability is a world-wide organisation, which aims to provide support and opportunities for people with disabilities to develop their interests in sailing, regardless of age or levels of ability.

No sailing experience is needed, just the motivation to experience a new frontier.

The whole experience revolves around participants enjoying the opportunity to get out on the water and view their local backyard from a new and safe environment.

Volunteers also have the opportunity to learn to sail, give back to the community and develop camaraderie with new people while being part of a worthy organisation. Members of the community interested in joining this team as a volunteer or participant can call 0427 059 688 or 0433 989 044.

GREAT CAUSE: John and Mim Kane and Sailability Whitsunday president Ross Winterbourn and committee members Deb Staples and Jenny Stratford, celebrating the success of the organisation's Australia Day fundraising event.
