Whitsunday Times - - WHITSUNDAY NEWS AND VIEWS -

THE news this week that American comedy series Modern Family will be filming here in the Whitsundays is big news.

Modern Family is an award winning comedy which first started in the U.S.A in 2009. It is watched by millions of viewers and therefore has millions of fans.

The filming that will be done here will be for the sixth season of ths show.

The fact they are filming here will create publicity for our region – and it this type of publicity which helps our area to become known internationally.

This is only weeks after Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie were here which would have already generated a lot of publicity across the world.

The other good news for our tourism industry this week is that the Queen Mary 2 – the world’s largest cruise liner – will be in Airlie Beach this weekend.

Last time the ship came here, about 2100 passengers came off the ship with about 1400 of those visiting Airlie Beach.

The QM2 is a tourist attraction in itself with many people driving to Airlie from surrounding areas just to see the ship.

On another matter...

Community spirit and generosity are still well and truly alive in the Whitsundays.

This week we have several stories about fundraisers for various events in the coming weeks.

These include the World’s Greatest Shave in March (see page 7), Relay For Life to raise money for the Cancer Council in May (see page 12) and a car rally to raise money for the Cancer Council (see page 37).

The people of the Whitsundays are always generous in supporting fundraisers and these events will be no exception.

Some local people have already announced they will be taking part in the greatest shave which is very brave.
