First win for Airlie Trashbags
MEMBERS of the Airlie Beach Trashbags Roller Derby team are celebrating their first official win this week in their first bout of the season.
The team travelled to Rockhampton at the weekend to play the Beef City Brawlers and came out 216-102 winners in a very well-executed game.
Newly elected team captain, Hayley ‘Gretchen Wheelers’ Waugh was very proud to have led her team to their first victory. “All the girls worked really hard, it was a well-deserved win. Our head coach, Alyssa ‘Jessica Rammit’ Cutuli, had been training us hard for months in the lead-up to this bout,” she said.
“We put into practice all the skills we learnt at the boot camps with Australian derby star Mad Mel Arena, and the Towns Villains Roller Derby team.”
Waugh made special mention of Emma ‘B.T.Killam’ Gil- lam and Sarah ‘Brig-HIT Bardot’ Savage, who played their first bout and held their own against more experienced players.
The Airlie Beach Trashbags are gearing up for more games, with approximately one per month for the first half of the year.
The next home game is scheduled for April 26 at the Whitsunday PCYC and all locals are invited to attend.
The team will also be running another new skater intake, or fresh meat course, as it is known in derby circles, for guys and girls over 18.
Anyone interested in learning how to play is welcome to come to an information night on Tuesday, March 4. More information about the fresh meat intake can be found on the team’s Facebook page www.facebook.com/AirlieBeachTrashBags.
