Canecutters forfeit gifts Valleys a win
WITH the Canecutters failing to field a side at the weekend fixture, Valleys claimed the points with a full side turning out for the match.
A twenty over a side scratch match was played in place of the normal fixture, with the Valleys team splitting and combining with Canecutters to form two teams of seven players.
Batting first, team 1 got off to a slow start thanks to some tight bowling and seam movement from Dale Mengel (1/12 from 4 overs).
Greg Dore (16) held up one end as his batting partners fell around him, with Mitch Taylor (1/17 from 3 overs) and Craig Brown (1/15 from 3 overs) sharing in the wickets.
Dore looked set to carry his bat through the innings, before an Aaron Regan (1/15 from 3 overs) thunderbolt knocked over his stumps.
Rhys Morgans (20) showed some resistance to the bowling attack, while Glen Meier (17) provided some spark in the final few overs before he sacrificed his wicket in a run out to see youngster Blake HardyYoung remain unbeaten on 10. After 20 overs, team 1 finished with the very modest total of just 88 runs.
With such a small total on the board, it was decided that team 2 would bat out all 20 overs regardless of the result.
Team 2 lost two early wickets with Hank Verwood (2/16 from 3 overs) claiming the two scalps to see the team struggling at 2/18 after 5 overs.
Like a good bottle of red wine, Craig Brown conti- nues to improve with age, notching up 43 runs after opening the batting before Bowen player Cohen Crocker (2/9 from 3 overs) rearranged his wickets.
This brought Aaron Regan to the crease with his unconventional style working wonders to see him remain unbeaten on 94, which included 8 fours and 8 sixes. This saw team 2 finish up with 5/168 after 20 overs and therefore easy victors.
This weekend (February 22) will see Valleys take on Warriors, with the game to commence at 12.30pm.
It would be great to get two full teams on the park, so new or returning players are encouraged to come along and have a game.
