Home regatta to start off season

Whitsunday Times - - SPORT -

OUTRIGGER Whitsunday is gearing up for a bumper 2014 season with the club to host the first meet of the year for the North Queensland zone on March 8-9.

The grand prix regatta will be held over two days at Shingley Beach and will incorporate the inaugural Whitsunday Challenge Daydream Dash event.

It will be a fully-branched regatta and teams from right across North Queensland and as far south as the Capricornia Coast and Rockhampton will make the trip to battle it out with local paddlers.

Club president Renee Martin said everyone at the club was looking forward to the regatta.

“We are hoping for a great turnout, it’s our biggest event of the year,” she said.

“It will be a great way to kick off the season for the NQ zone. There will be marathon and sprint races as well as the Daydream Dash which will be a fantastic race.”

Club members are busy training for the regatta and this week welcomed Abell Point Marina on board as a major sponsor in more positive news for the club.

Abell Point will be providing club shirts for paddlers to wear at regatta presentations and other formal events and are also sponsoring the club’s new Kamanu canoe and the first ever Daydream Dash.
