AFL fans were thrilled to welcome Hawthorn Hawks legend and media personality Dermott Brereton to town on the weekend.

Brereton was in town on Saturday to speak at a function at the Reef Gateway Hotel organised by the Whitsunday Bald Eagles.

He also took time out to attend the Whitsunday Sea Eagles sign-on and skills clinic.

“I’ve been to Cairns and a few other places in North Queensland with Getaway and Fox Footy but this is the first time I’ve ever been to Airlie Beach,” he said.

“It’s an absolutely gorgeous spot, I flew in to Hamilton Island and some of the Bald Eagles came to pick me up and then we were off to the junior clinic. I took the kids for a training run which was fantastic and they were a ripping group.”

Brereton praised the hard work of the Bald Eagles in setting up the event and also complimented the Sea Eagles on their efforts setting up the clinic.

“It was a really well run event and it’s great to see so many kids involved in Aussie Rules. I think the most important thing is just that the kids are involved in a sport, whether it be AFL or basketball or whatever they like,” he said.

Bald Eagles president Jack Lumby and vice-president Rod Tulk worked tirelessly behind the scenes to get the event off the ground and thanked everyone who had helped them and come along to the dinner on Saturday night.

“Thank you to all involved with Saturday’s Dermott Brereton function at the Reef Gateway. A great night was had by all,” Lumby said.

“He was professional, polite and very friendly as well a captivating speaker who works the room very well indeed.”
