Drunken man has bail revoked

Whitsunday Times - - LOCAL NEWS -

A MAN who drank alcohol before appearing in the Proserpine Magistrate’s Court on Monday had his bail revoked and was taken into custody to sober up.

Steve Douglas Austin was allegedly too drunk to give duty lawyer Sherrie Meade accurate instructions on how his charges were to proceed.

Ms Meade told the court that given his past history, Austin believed he would be going to jail and had therefore “had a few drinks”.

She said having consumed alcohol, he was not in a posi- tion to give instructions and she requested an adjournment.

Instead, magistrate Haydn Stjernqvist revoked Austin’s bail and had police officers remove him from the court, saying this was a “contemptuous act”.

“You’re clearly intoxicated... [and] you can stay in custody until you sober up,” he said.

At 2pm, Austin was brought back to court and his charges were adjourned.

He is scheduled to appear again on March 3.
