High school wel­comes new lead­ers for 2014

LO­GAN Dachs and Alice Rud­dell are the 2014 school cap­tains of Proser­pine State High School.

They were in­ducted at a spe­cial cer­e­mony at­tended by more than 900 stu­dents, teach­ers, sup­port staff and com­mu­nity mem­bers at the school hall.

Prin­ci­pal Don McDer­mid pre­sented the badges of of­fice to the new school cap­tains who were joined by vice cap­tains By­ron Thomp­son and Is­abelle Sil­ber­ling.

Mr Dachs spoke on be­half of all school lead­ers and said he was hon­oured to take on the role of school cap­tain.

“I prom­ise you that we will strive to make 2014 the best and most mem­o­rable year in your school­ing ca­reer,” he said. “Re­mem­ber to re­spect yourself, re­spect each other, re­spect the teach­ers and their knowl­edge and re­spect this great learn­ing in­sti­tu­tion…let’s to­gether al­ways strive to do the best we that we can.”

Caitlin Whar­ton was an­nounced as the first Indige­nous stu­dent leader in the his­tory of Proser­pine State High School.

Ms Whar­ton said she hoped to close the gap be­tween Indige­nous and non-Indige­nous Aus­tralians by bring­ing to­gether the lo­cal Indige­nous com­mu­nity and school com­mu­nity in her new role.

The 2014 stu­dent coun­cil ex­ec­u­tive team will be led by pres­i­dent Ash­ley Muller with vice pres­i­dent Josh Bar­rett, sec­re­tary Lara Mathews and trea­surer Maddi Gra­ham.

Mr McDer­mid said the cer­e­mony was one of the most im­por­tant events in the school year. “Our stu­dent lead­ers have been en­trusted with the re­spon­si­bil­ity of up­hold­ing the val­ues of lead­er­ship at Proser­pine State High School,” he said. “I want 2014 to be a year where stu­dent in­volve­ment in the school ad­min­is­tra­tion continues to strengthen, be­com­ing an in­te­gral part of the de­ci­sion mak­ing process.”

Danny Van­der Berg from Wil­mar Su­gar pre­sented the Dou­glas Deb­ney Me­mo­rial Bur­sary to Mah­moud Abd ElBaky and the Ge­orge Telford Me­mo­rial Bur­sary to Sarah Rodgers.
