COUNCIL IN CHAOS
Cr Collins resigns
KEVIN Collins has announced his resignation as the Division 2 councillor of Whitsunday Regional Council, citing integrity issues as the reason for leaving his post mid-term.
Mr Collins, who is also the co-owner of Fish D’Vine in Airlie Beach, said he did not want to engage in speculation, or fan the flames of current community concerns, other than to say he felt compromised by decisions he has made of late, which, while in the interests of the wider community, did not coincide with his own beliefs, ethics or principles.
“I am sorry I will not be continuing to represent the interests of the residents of Division 2 but ultimately, this became a matter of principle,” he said.
Cr Collins said he was disappointed to have let down those who voted for him and for causing the inconvenience of a by-election, to be held within 12 weeks of the date his resignation takes effect, next Monday, March 10.
In his resignation statement he conceded to having been “opinionated, passionate and at times overbearing, in respect to many of the issues before council”. However, he wished all those in Council every success working through future challenges and promised to fully support the next Division 2 councillor in any way possible.
Mayor Jennifer Whitney said she respected Cr Collins for the decision he had made.
“It has been a very challenging term of Council with councillors having to make some of the toughest unprecedented decisions to bring Council back on track,” she said.
“I believe these decisions have taken their toll on both Council and councillors [and] when standing for election I do not believe anyone was truly aware of the situation this council has found itself in.
“There has been little to no ability for any councillor to deliver on election commitments, due to Council’s funding constraints as constantly we have been trying to achieve debt reduction.”
Cr Whitney thanked Cr Collins for his contributions to Council and the community over the past 22 months and she wished him the best in his future endeavours.
RESIGNED: Kevin Collins has quit half-way through the current council term.
