Whitsunday Times - - WHITSUNDAY VIEWS -

I ATTENDED last week’s council meeting in Bowen and witnessed the most disgusting display of bias, hate and ignorance made by a rabble of misinformed presumed residents and ratepayers from Bowen.

In all my years of community activism from the Shoalhaven NSW, inner city Sydney and for the past 20 years in Whitsundays, I have never seen such venom aimed at particular councillors.

In our society, cries of “kill them”, “kill her” are not the actions of reasonable people exercising their democratic right to protest.

What small group or entity is manipulating this mob and to what agenda?

Even when information they called for was being presented to them they wouldn't stop their vicious and ill-informed heckling to listen.

I could suppose that the information being given wasn't what they wanted to hear.

Or perhaps they thought their behaviour would cause a riot? Fortunately that didn't happen; perhaps the arrival of the police had something to do with that?

Well, facts are facts and truth is truth and eventually both will win out over blind ignorance. For instance, none of the persons I asked had ever attended a council meeting before.

Where were they all through 2008/9/10?

Personally, once amalgamation was a fact, I have always tried to think and act on the premise that we are “one” community. But after that meeting, I think the Bowen majority of reasonable residents need to do their own research and start to question the persons who are representing them at the moment.

It's not a pretty picture. Faye Chapman CANNONVALE
