Whitsunday Times - - COMMUNITY NEWS -

BROOKE Tupaea’s jaw dropped when she was announced as the public speaking winner and overall winner of the 2014 Whitsunday Lions Youth of the Year competition on Saturday.

Nine students entered the competition which was held at the Whitsunday Christian College school hall and were assessed on a 20 minute interview, two impromptu questions and a five minute prepared speech by a panel of judges.

Event organiser and chairperson Gloria Demartini said the quality of speeches was phenomenal and praised all contestants on their outstanding efforts.

The Proserpine Lions Club held their Proserpine Lions Youth of the Year competition last month.

President David Hinschen said the competition was a great stepping stone for the future careers of all contestants. The contest was run over one day with 80 per cent of the marks coming from judges questioning students on numerous subjects and 20 percent on the public speaking.

The winner of the public speaking was Brent Matthews and the overall winner of the Lions Youth of the Year was Isabelle Silberling.

Both Brooke and Isabelle will be competing in the zone final at the Proserpine Entertainment Centre this Sunday from 12pm.

They will be two of four contestants competing from Proserpine, Whitsunday, Bowen and Collinsville and the event will be hosted by the Whitsun- day Lions Club. The zone winner will compete at the regional final which will be hosted by the Proserpine Lions Club and held at the Proserpine Ex-Services Club on Sunday, March 16.

The winner from the regional final will then compete at the district competition in Mackay on March 28, with the district winner to then compete at the state finals in Cairns on April 12.
