State karting championships set to draw a big crowd in July
MORE than 350 of the nation’s best go kart drivers will converge on the Whitsunday Raceway for the 2014 Queensland Open Karting Championships from July 11-13.
Whitsunday Moto Sports Club (WMSC) kart president Adam Stroud said the event was going full steam ahead and was shaping up to be the biggest karting event of the year.
“We are still looking for vo- lunteers to help out over the six days of the championships and it’s a great way to get up close to all the racing action while supporting our local drivers,” he said.
Abell Point Marina owner Paul Darrouzet recently announced his sponsorship of the event and has provided funding to cover the costs of officials, their travel and accommodation.
Stroud said covering the cost of officials was critical to getting the event off the ground. “Local businesses are welcome to sponsor a karting class or donate their products and services for the championships,” he said.
“The 350 plus entries we receive equates to more than 2000 people when you take into consideration the pit crew, drivers, and spectators travelling to the raceway. The event offers great exposure for local businesses and is a welcome boost for tourism in the region.”
The championships will be held over six days with three days of practice taking place from July 8-10, followed by three days of intense racing from July 11-13.
Stroud said the main spectators days will be the Saturday and Sunday of the championships.
The WMSC will also be hosting the Shakedown Great Barrier Reef Titles at the Whitsunday Raceway from June 7-8, which will serve as the perfect warm-up for the open championships in July.
