Navy cadets enjoy weekend camp
NAVY cadets from the local unit New Training Ship (NTS) Whitsunday enjoyed their first weekend activity for 2014 on Saturday and Sunday.
A total of 15 cadets aged between 12-and-a-half and 18, took part in the camping and on-water activity event.
Cadets set up camp at Cannonvale’s Seabreeze Caravan Park on Saturday morning before heading to Shingley Beach for a four-hour sailing session in the unit’s two corsairs.
NTS commanding officer Sub Lieutenant James Lang said the afternoon included a capsize drill, for the unit’s seven new recruits, who learned vital skills such as how to right their capsized boat.
The evening was spent on fun activities back at the camp, including preparing a barbeque dinner and watching Identity Thief on an outdoor movie screen.
On Sunday, the cadets were up early and after a hearty barbeque breakfast they made their way back to Shingley Beach for more sailing activities.
Sub Lt Lang said thanks to the generosity of management at Abell Point Marina, cadets were able to leave the corsairs fully assembled in the marina, saving valuable time that would otherwise have been spent packing them away.
At the end of the weekend exercise he said cadets appeared to have learnt some important boating and life skills.
“They certainly learned some really good team work skills and leadership in terms of who was in charge of the boat, giving directions and everyone trusting that person,” he said.
“And they just generally had fun getting out there.”
Next on the agenda for NTS Whitsunday is a power boat safety course for staff in Mackay.
