THE Proserpine Whitsunday Brahmans are gearing up for a successful 2014 season, and have named longterm local Billy Boyd and English front rower Callum Wilkinson as the co-coaches to lead the under-18s this year.

Wilkinson will join a foreign legion at the club which includes A grade coach and former Welsh international Anthony Blackwood.

Wilkinson’s most recent achievement was playing representative football for the South Wales Scorpions before relocating to Australia earlier this year. He has also completed a degree in sports coaching at the Cardiff Metropolitan University from 2010-2013, and is looking forward to leading the young side to the grand finals this year.

“The players and club committee have been really welcoming and we have some very big boys in the 18’s side so I’m confident we will have one of the strongest forward packs in the competition,” he said. “I want to help the boys develop their skills so their transition to A grade will be an easy step up for them.”

Former Brahmans player Billy Boyd led the reserves last year but was keen to take on the new role as co-coach of the under-18s.

Boyd is planning to develop a simple game plan that will play to the strengths of the side. Also new to coaching roles this year are reserves captain/coach Hugh Middleton who will be taking charge of the side for their 2014 season and strength and conditioning coach Karl Telford.

A mixed squad of Brahmans players travelled to Bowen on the weekend to compete in a full day carnival against six rugby league teams from across the region.

Blackwood said all players performed well, with the team qualifying for the semi finals. “Afew key players sustained injuries on the day otherwise I’m sure we would have gone further but it was nothing major,” he said.

A trial match between the Brahmans and the Magpies will be held at Les Stagg Oval in Proserpine this Saturday.

The under-18s will kick off at 6.30pm, with the reserve/A grade to start at 6.30pm.
