Tipping kicks off for 2014

Whitsunday Times - - SPORT -

SIX brave Whitsunday men have stepped up to compete in the 2014 Whitsunday Times NRL Footy Tipping competition, which starts today (see below) as the season kicks off this weekend.

Justin Andrews from Reefcool, Michael Brady from Cavalier Homes and Mark O’Connor from Amalgamated Pest Control have all returned after last year, and Steve Knox has returned after a one year break.

Newcomers Chris Bunyoung from Fairbairn Bakery at Centro and Michael ‘Wal’ Walton from Rod Grittner Nissan in Proserpine have joined the competition, hoping that their passion for the game will put them in the running to win first prize, which is a trip for two to the NRL grand final.

All the tipsters have a different reason for participating in the competition, but all agree it is fun and great for business.

“I enjoy football, and it’s good advertising for us,” said Brady from Cavalier Homes, who was pipped at the post in the last round in the 2012 competition. “This year it’s my turn to win.”

Reigning champ Andrews had some start of the season advice for the newcomers. “It’s a bit of a lottery at the moment. There was mixed form in the trials, a lot of injuries. I reckon it will take 4-6 weeks for the competition to settle down.” He also applauded the exposure the comp provided. “It’s a unique and interactive form of advertising. A lot of people follow it.”

Cowboy’s fan Wal from Grittner’s won sixth overall in the 2012 national NRL comp. He follows the footy pretty closely, and hopes his knowledge of NRL will help him take the prize. The Whitsunday Times’ AFL comp kicks off next week and there are still some spots available for businesses to join. Call the Whitsunday Times office on 4940 2100 for information.
