Good fishing off rockwalls in bad Whitsunday weather

Whitsunday Times - - SPORT/REELIN’ IN -

RIVER

THE tides are great for fishing the river, so it’s a shame the weather is not co-operating.

The approaching neap tides are ideal for the Prossie River.

There have been fingermark and barra caught around the rocks at Wilsons Beach, and the crabs are on the move so if you are heading up the river throw some pots on.

DAM

The big barramundi have all moved into the basin, probably due to the possible ap- proaching weather. Barra are known to shut down prior to big weather events, however if the wind and rain doesn’t come over the weekend, it’s worth trolling the basin to target these big fish. ISLANDS

Not much to report from the islands due to the weather, however there have some been some reports of huge GTs caught off the jetties around the islands, including Lindeman Island.

If you’re lucky enough, you can catch Spanish from the jetties also.

A reminder that the in possession bag limit pertains to what you have stored at home and in the freezer also.

ROCKWALLS

Muddy Bay rockwalls are proving very productive recently, especially around the Port of Airlie boat ramp. Lots of golden trevally, and the odd barra and mangrove jack are being caught on frozen or live prawns, frozen squid or plastics.

There has also been a cou- ple of reports of coral trout caught around the Abell Point Marina rockwalls, which is quite unusual. Geoff Philp Airlie Bait and Tackle

REEF

Not much to report from the reef due to the inclement weather, and it looks like more of the same over the next few days.

Make the most of your weekend by servicing your gear and preparing for a possible cyclone.
