Youth prepare for regional final
PROSERPINE State High School student Brent Matthews and Bowen State High School student Arania Sivasubramaniam were the overall winners of the Lions Youth of the Year zone final on Sunday.
Whitsunday Christian College student Brooke Tupaea was named as the public speaking winner at the event which was held at the Proserpine Entertainment Centre.
The fourth zone contestant from Collinsville State High School had to withdraw due to illness.
Interviews were conducted in the morning session where judges were able to determine the leadership qualities, sporting and cultural activities, citizenship, community involvement and academic achievements of each contestant.
Other factors and scores included manner, deportment, cultural appreciation and public speaking.
The judging panel were able to gain an insight into the knowledge that each contes- tant had on issues of local, state, national and international interests. In the afternoon session, contestants had to answer two impromptu questions, and then deliver a five minute prepared speech.
Whitsunday Lions Club zone chairman Gloria Demartini congratulated all contestants on their decision to enter the quest and the experience they would have gained through their interview and public speaking sections.
“We wish them all the best for the next level of the quest,” she said.
The two zone winners will be competing at the regional final which will be hosted by the Proserpine Lions Club and held at the Proserpine Entertainment Centre Whitsunday (PECW) this Sunday.
They will be going up against two zone finalists from Mackay. The winner from the regional final will then compete at the district competition in Mackay on March 28, with the district winner to then compete at the state finals in Cairns on April 12.
