Bowlers battle for close scores in club champs
SATURDAY’S competition games were played before the rain became an issue.
In the morning there was one game of club championship singles played.
Barry Saroglia defeated Matthew Camm 25-15 in 25 ends. Saroglia got the early lead but Camm clawed his way back before Saroglia took over again to finish off the match.
Two games of B singles were also played in the morning. Dale Haack dominated in his game against Vince Olsen to win 25-8 in 17 ends.
Shane Spann and John Henderson had one of those battles with Spann starting off like a rocket and Henderson replying with chasing until the scores levelled at 18 all on the eighteenth end.
The game was eventually won by Spann 25-22 after 23 ends.
In the afternoon, a game of club championship fours was played which was another close match.
Ben Cutrone, Brian Pearce, Scott Kinnear and Barry Saroglia defeated John Henderson, Reg Russell, Philip Brown and Gavin Milne 23-20.
In club championship singles, Jonathan Bye and Shane Spann played 31 ends to determine the winner with Bye defeating Spann 25-18.
Spann then backed up for his game of B singles where he was defeated by Shane Kinnear 25-14 in a 24 end game.
Spann got lots of bowling practice on Saturday, playing 70 ends of singles which equates to 280 bowls (if there are no dead ends) and at least 2.5km of walking.
Sunday’s social bowls were washed out.
There will be no men’s competitions this weekend due to several players travelling to Glenden.
The club wishes all teams competing in the invitational fours on the weekend good luck.
Wednesday’s weather cleared to allow bowlers to play for the club’s opening day. There was a great turnout of players from Airlie Beach, Collinsville and Wangaratta plus many of Proserpine’s own members there to kick off our bowling year.
Many thanks to all who contributed to make the day such a success.
It really was a whole club effort.
Spiders donated by Fran Porter were won by Joan McGrath, Margo Stanley, Merle Elphinstone and Barbara Dammash.
Touchas were donated by Joy Jeffries. All touchas were rewarded with a raffle ticket, with 55 touchas recorded in the afternoon.
Four prizes were drawn from these tickets.
The lucky door prize was donated by Joan McGrath and was won by Dot Hinschen.
