AFL tipping comp starts

Whitsunday Times - - SPORT -

AFL kicks off this week, and the chances of winning the Whitsunday Times AFL footy tipping competition are higher than ever.

With six tipsters participating, the competition will be intense.

Allan Robinson from All Marine Services and Dale Mackrill from Whitsunday Pool Services have returned again, determined to out-tip Don Cameron from Master Butchers who won the competition in 2012. All three have been in the competition since it started in 2011 and the rivalry is friendly but fierce.

Mackrill, a passionate Blues supporter, said he enjoys the annual competition and the coverage it brings his business. He is hoping for a win this year, saying it’s his turn, but admitted to tipping from the heart, which can sometimes prove detrimental to his form.

Two newcomers, Jack Patton from Whitsunday Auto Repairs and Michael Bertram from Bert’s Bistro at Banjos, are keen to prove their AFL expertise.

Bertram, known to many locals as Bert, said it was a good opportunity for the community to get to know the face behind the food at Banjo’s. And beating Master Butcher’s seems a common goal for the tipsters.

“I’m pretty passionate about footy,” he said. “I’m going for a win, look out Don Cameron.”

Whitsunday Auto Repairs is also looking for a win.

“I love AFL,” Patton said. “I’ve seen the competition in the Times over the years and I wanted to get involved.” The mad keen Tiger’s supporter added “I want to see the Blues go down at the end of the season.”
